Triple Threat on the Volleyball Court

Rarely does a sports team have three siblings on the same court, nonetheless three influential players.

Senior Michala Merlino and her two sisters, junior Maddie and freshman Meghan, take over the volleyball court.  The three of them have big plans for their season on varsity together as a family.

As they have never played competitively on the same team before, they are all very excited for this upcoming volleyball season.

“I think it will bring us a lot closer together because it’s easy to support family and I consider all of the girls on varsity to be part of our own little family,” said Michala.

As their first game against Bella Vista on Sep. 5 gets closer and closer, the girls varsity team has been preparing to dominate just like last year. The team will be looking to repeat their league championship and possibly make a run at the section title.

“I’m really excited to play with my sisters.  I’ve known them for a long time and it’s easy to connect with them,” said Meghan.

This chemistry could be vital to the success of the relatively young team, one with only five returning seniors.

With this valuable trio of sisters, the team’s goal is to beat their record last year, 9-1, and go undefeated in league along with winning the league title.

Michala, Maddie, and Meghan have all been playing volleyball since fifth grade.  They have played on club teams including Force and Five Stars.

Michala plays opposite, libero, and setter for the team.  Maddie also plays as setter, and Meghan plays opposite as well as outside hitter.

Meghan is the only freshman on the squad and will be looking to make an immediate impact. She will be one of the starting outside hitter in her first season for the team.

With Michala entering her last season after four years of playing varsity volleyball, she plans to continue with more years of volleyball in college, possibly at Sac State.

Although the girls will be losing Michala after this season, the two younger Merlinos will surely step up to fill in their sister’s shoes.

In the meantime, the Merlino sisters are looking forward to a long and successful season for their high school.
