Rio Americano sports teams will be competing in a new league starting in fall of 2024.
The recently announced CIF realignment will send Rio from the Capital Athletic League to the Division II Capital Valley conference, joining Bella Vista, Inderkum, and Woodcreek. Also moving to the CVC from CAL are Vista del Lago, and Chritsian Brothers. Ponderosa is also moving to the league.
Rivals such El Camino and Capital Christian will no longer be in Rio’s league.
Del Campo and Sacramento are moving from the Cal League to Division III, while El Camino is joining a Division IV league. Capital Christian will split teams, playing football and boys’ basketball in Division II and other sports in Division IV.
Athletic Director William Taylor said the change will put Rio in a highly competitive sports league.
“It’s a really good baseball league, and also an excellent water polo league,” athletic director William Taylor said.
Rio has been successful in the CAL this year, sending all fall and winter sports to postseason play, except football, which won its last three games to finish 3-3 in league.
The original alignment was supposed to go into execution back in 2020, but was delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic.
