Our 20 member AM Jazz Ensemble performed and competed in the Essentially Ellington Festival in New York City’s Lincoln Center over the weekend. This festival, put on and hosted by Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, is the pinnacle of high school jazz, and brings together the top 15 bands from across North America. This is Rio’s sixth time being selected as a finalist for EE.
Rio took fourth place overall, the highest we have ever placed. Our kids were absolutely amazing. They received a long standing ovation, and garnered quite a bit of attention, from all corners of the country and beyond. Here’s a link to the performances- http://deeper.io/jalc-edu/Default.aspx?mg=5b4420c6-30a5-4057-9d16-a9ca2cd1becf&ti Once Rio’s cued up, just hit the play button on the small screen.
Individual awards were won by four Rio students-
Michael Wang (senior), outstanding trombone
Paul Slater (junior), outstanding drums
Andrew Stephens (sophomore), outstanding trumpet
Emery Mesich (sophomore), honorable mention outstanding alto sax
We all had a great time, but it’s good to be back home.
