Trivia nights come to an abrupt end

By JOHN BUTTERFIELD

The Sacramento Brewing Company, located on the corner of Marconi and Fulton, closed its doors on October 18, 2009. Now, both teacher and student trivia enthusiasts must search for a new venue.

It was no trivial matter when The Sacramento Brewing Company, a popular restaurant and brewery in Town and Country Plaza, closed unexpectedly.

Though the restaurant was known for its food, the trivia held there every Thursday night made it a hot spot for locals, including some teachers and students.

Math teacher Todd Freund, a long time trivia buff and participant, usually had a team consisting of his friends for the trivia festivities.

Another Rio team usually included teachers Darren Miller, Dean Baird, Kelly Lewis, Gary Blenner, and sometimes William Taylor and Christy Thomas.

Junior Nicholas Karas also had a team that typically included his father, junior Michael Ofek, junior Alex Yankauer and junior Reed Breuer. Eric Warburg and a few other Rio '09 alumni were also known to join in.

Both the teachers and students all enjoyed going out together to have a good time, carrying on this tradition that has lasted as long as five years for some.

Not only were the trivia questions superior, but the bond between teachers, students, and alumni became closer on this Thursday night every week.

"We always tried to beat the team of Rio teachers and Freund's team," Karas said. "Generally we finished around the middle of the pack."

Freund, an avid trivia man, liked participating in trivia at the brewery for some relaxing and thought-provoking entertainment.

"It was really fun to spend time with people you enjoy and be with other people who love trivia," Freund said. When the news spread that the Brewing Co. closed, teachers’ and students' reactions ranged from slightly disappointed to fully shocked.

"I’m bummed, but I’m not losing sleep over it," Freund said. He knows there are other trivia outlets available.

History and government teacher Gary Blenner, however, did not adapt as easily; he was a bit more disappointed.

"It was inevitable with the economy, service, and food though," Blenner said.

The closing even shocked some trivia lovers, who never expected such a disaster could have occurred.

"I was sad and flabbergasted as to how it could have closed so unexpectedly," Karas said.

According to Freund, one reason the brewery might have gone out of business was the recent increase in the price of food; some items on the menu increased by four dollars overnight.

Even though the Sac Brewing Co. is closed, the teachers and students might still try to keep the tradition alive.

Chris Findlay, the man who held trivia at the Brewing Co., has moved to de Vere's Irish Pub also downtown, and holds trivia games there on Monday nights. Bella Bru, a local cafe, also holds trivia once a week.

"I just started Sunday at Bella Bru," Freund said, but he doesn’t know if he’ll stick with it.

Other teachers may try and get together to go to the Irish Pub.

However, trivia has been, "falling apart recently," according to Blenner. "Now I just grade papers."
